The National Portrait Gallery

Concordia has had a special relationship with the National Portrait Gallery since 2004. Concordia has presented a number of concerts in various rooms within the Gallery, offering young musicians a chance to perform amongst some of the World’s greatest artworks and provide art-lovers with an audio-visual experience with presentations closely related to the exhibitions on show.

24th June 2011 Ballad Songs and Snatches, Jeff Clarke Director/Musical Director

Concordia presents Tanya Cooling soprano, Angela Simkin mezzo-soprano, Philip Cox actor, Christopher Diffey tenor, Ian Belsey baritone, Annmarie McDade violin and Gavin Morrison flute. A programme of poetry and song in a tribute to Gilbert and Sullivan.

9th December 2011 Sophisticated Ladies

Concordia presents the Concordia Cello Ensemble and Anna Patalong. The Concordia Cello Ensemble of 10 talented Concordia artists was formed in 2011. Tonight they present a programme of elegant music from Bach to Villa-lobos and Jimi Hendrix in a tribute the sophisticated ladies in the First Actresses Exhibition at the Gallery.

11th June 2010 Meet Bridget Riley

Concordia presents John Paul Ekins piano, Annie Yim piano, Michel Cwizewiez violin, Valda Wilson soprano, Emily Andrews flute and Gillian Humphreys presenter/director. In the company of Bridget Riley’s early portraits, we explore musical journeys taken by composers. We illustrate the first steps of our creative  journey with Bach at the beginning, who inspired our featured composers including Arvo Part, Stravinsky, Ravel, Chopin, Paganini and Philip Glass.

3rd December 2010 A Winter Serenade

Concordia presents Joseph Middleton piano, Irmina Trynkos violin, Keri Fuge soprano and Anna Huntley mezzo-soprano. Gillian Humphreys invites you to join the Concordia International Ensemble for a festive evening of winter serenades and songs to the moon.

17th July 2009 Street Cries

Concordia presents VOCES8 and Satoko Fukuda. London is a place of wonder, an inspiration to those who live here and those who visit it. This concert takes us on a journey through the rich tapestry of life in London across the ages. Listen for the street cries in the new accapella arrangement premiered this evening and feel the thrill of danger as we see the darker, underground, side of Renaissance London in ‘Vigilate’ by William Byrd.

4th December 2009 Every Winter Change to Spring

Concordia presents Annie Yim piano, Tanya Cooling soprano, Nicky Spence tenor, Sadie Fields violin, Timothy Connor baritone and Simon Lane piano. The 19th century was a time of giants: great actors and actresses, great poets and writers, great philopsophers and political theorists, great composers and performers. Romanticism, Orientalism and Folk Song were three artistic movements that linked the creative worlds of the Victorian era. The Concordia International Ensemble pays tribute to this wonderful period in words and music.

13th June 2008 Summer Fantasy

Concordia presents Ensemble Mestizo – Ahmed Dickinson, Lizzie Ball, Antoine Francoise, Abigail Wragg, Ben Wragg, Leanne Wren and Duncan Rock baritone. Musical journeys including works by Vivaldi, Schumann, Brahms, Gershwin, Piazzolla, Monti-Czardas, Poulenc and Kreisler.

12th December 2008 Musical Portraits

Concordia presents Anna Cashell violin, Sophie Cashell piano, Claudia Boyle soprano, Brian Gilligan tenor, John-Owen Miley-Read baritone, Rachel Kelly mezzo-soprano and Mairhead Hurley accompanist. 

16th March 2007 On Wings of Love

Concordia presents James Cleverton baritone, Laura Mitchell soprano, Irmina Trynkos violin and Marco Fatichenti piano. A romantic journey of love and desire with music by Purcell, Mozart, Massanet, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Leoncavello, Puccini, Bizet, Brahms, Gounod, Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams and Gershwin.

14th December 2007 Christmas in Trafalgar Square

Concordia presents Katie Stillman violin, Nemeti Gergely tenor, Norah King soprano, John Savournin bass baritone, Satoko Fukuda violin, Simon Lane piano, Magdalena Zuk piano, David Eaton piano. A programme of beautiful and uplifitng Christmas music.

6th January 2006 Evocare Piano Trio

Concordia presents Marie Lee Gustafsson piano, Anna Cashell violin, Andrew Joyce cello. The Evocare Piano Trio performs a programme of Mozart, Frank Bridge and Piazzolla.

21st April 2006 Shakespeare and Love

Concordia presents David Laughton piano/actor, Phil Cornwell piano/bass, Sarah Bird actor/singer, Eliana Pretorian soprano, Darren Raymond actor, Julie Groves flute, Michael Grant saxophone. An Anthology of verse, prose and music -romantic, tragic and comic- taken from the words of William Shakespeare.

15th December 2006 A Winter Miscellany

Concorda presents Bridget Cunningham harpsichord, Katherine Manley soprano, Jennifer Bullock baroque cello, Laura Waghorn recorders, Huw Daniel baroque violin, Darren Raymond actor/poet. Musicians in period costume perform music by Handel, J.S. Bach, Roseingrave, Lyons, Vivaldi, Corelli and Turlough O’Carolan. 

7th January 2005 A Musical Journey in the company of Panoply

Concordia presents Panoply: Bobby Chen piano, Anna Cashell violin, Carl Herring guitar, Yi Yao piano accordion, Matt Baker double bass, Alexandra Woodhead percussion. an exciting programme of Latin/chinese fusion.

11th February 2005 A Spanish Journey through Music

Concordia presents Anna Cashell violin, Cristina Granero Vargas flute, Sarah Moule soprano and Morgan Syzmanski guitar. A Spanish celebration with a programme including De Falla, Villa-lobos, Albeniz, Tarrega and Piazzolla. 

18th March 2005 Love from Ivor, Created by Richard Stirling

Concordia presents Gillian Humphreys and Richard Stirling, Michael Chance actor, Louise Crane mezzo-soprano, Adriano Graziani tenor, Miho Sanou piano, Khac-Yuen Nguyen violin. Love from Ivor was created by Richard Stirling for the COncordia Foundation in 2002 and has since played at the Lindbury Theatre (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), at the Walter Reade Theater (Lincoln Centre, New York) and on the QE2. 

16th December 2005 A Dickensian Christmas, Directed by Richard Stirling

Concordia presents Satoko Fukuda violin, Susan Parkes soprano, Adam Linstead bass, Marc Verter piano, Gillian Humpreys soprano. The Concordia Foundation celebrates the advent of Christmas with a sparkling programme drawn from music and literature of the mid-nineteenth century – what we know of as the heyday of Charles Dickens.

29 October 2004 Winter in Majorca

Concordia presents Emmanuel Despaux piano and Carol Carey (as George Sand). The company recaptures the passion and brilliance of Chopin and Sand- one of the most contradictory and fascinating couples in artistic history.

19th November 2004  The Musical World of Mazaika

Concordia presents Igor Outkine tenor/piano accordion and Sarah Harrison violin with Gareth McLearnon. Mazaika, formed in 1997, presents a passionate and highly entertaining mix of classical and gypsy showpieces, Russian Folksongs, Opera, Tango and jazz.

Concordia presents John Savournin baritone, Hannah Richmond soprano, Adam Hepkin baritone, Adrian Sarple actor. Every time and place in London has its legends, from the fog of Dickins’ Covent Garden to the squares of the Bloomsbury Group and the suburbs of Betjeman. Always there is music in the air.
