Diphonon Duo is a viola and accordion musical duo formed by the Greek viola player Michael Iskas and Inigo Mikeleiz-Berrade, accordionist from Navarra (Spain). They met in 2015 during their Master of Arts studies at the Royal Academy of Music and after discovering they share common musical interests, they decided to establish this ensemble.
The word "Diphonon" means in Greek "two voices".
The combination of accordion and viola is a rather rare instrument pairing, but that is taken as an opportunity to explore music in a different and more flexible way than the usual classical music standards do.
The repertoire performed by Diphonon Duo reaches different styles and ages involving the audience in a journey through time and space, reflecting traditional elements of various regions of the world and including new comissions and premières.
Diphonon Duo performs in various venues in London and the UK such as the Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-fields, Royal Academy of Music, British Museum and Colston Hall (Bristol). During the course 2017/18 they were appointed "Wigmore Hall Learning Ensemble", keeping a close collaboration with Wigmore Hall learning department since then.
